Brown: Red-Blooded Risk: The Secret History of Wall Street

An innovative guide that identifies what distinguishes the best financial risk takers from the rest. From 1987 to 1992, a small group of Wall Street quants invented an entirely new way of managing risk to maximize success: risk management for risk-takers. This is the secret that lets tiny quantitative edges create hedge fund billionaires, and defines the powerful modern global derivatives economy. The same practical techniques are still used today by risk-takers in finance as well as many other fields. Red-Blooded Risk examines this approach and offers valuable advice for the calculated risk-takers who need precise quantitative guidance that will help separate them from the rest of the pack.

While most commentators say that the last financial crisis proved it's time to follow risk-minimizing techniques, they're wrong. The only way to succeed at anything is to manage true risk, which includes the chance of loss. Red-Blooded Risk presents specific, actionable strategies that will allow you to be a practical risk-taker in even the most dynamic markets.

There are people who disapprove of every risk before the fact, but never stop anyone from doing anything dangerous because they want to take credit for any success. The recent financial crisis has swelled their ranks, but in learning how to break free of these people, you'll discover how taking on the right risk can open the door to the most profitable opportunities.

Schlichter: Paper Money Collapse: The Folly of Elastic Money & the Coming Monetary Breakdown

The case for the inevitable failure of a paper money economy and what that means for the future. All paper money systems in history have ended in failure. Either they collapsed in chaos, or society returned to commodity money before that could happen. Drawing upon novel new research, Paper Money Collapse conclusively illustrates why paper money systems—those based on an elastic and constantly expanding supply of money as opposed to a system of commodity money of essentially fixed supply—are inherently unstable and why they must lead to economic disintegration.

These highly controversial conclusions clash with the present consensus, which holds that elastic state money is superior to inflexible commodity money (such as a gold standard), and that expanding money is harmless or even beneficial for as long as inflation stays low. Contradicting this, Paper Money Collapse shows that:
  • The present crisis is the unavoidable result of continuously expanding fiat money.
  • The current policy of accelerated money production to "stimulate" the economy is counterproductive and could lead to a complete collapse of the monetary system.
  • Why many in financial markets, in media, and in the policy establishment are unable (and often unwilling) to fully appreciate the underlying problems with elastic money.

This compelling new book looks at the breakdown of modern economic theory and the fallacy of mathematical models. It is an analysis of the current financial crisis and shows in very stark terms that the solutions presented by paper money-enthusiasts around the world are misguided and inherently flawed.

Barkham: Real Estate & Globalisation

2000 to 2010 was a remarkable decade for real estate. It started with the dot.com bubble and ended with the putative recovery from the Great Financial Crisis. The period in-between featured the world's first coordinated real estate boom and slump. This book is based on a series of briefings on the relationship between macro economic events and real estate markets in the era of globalisation that covered the period. Collectively they offer unique insights, new ideas and practical approaches to real estate economics, grounded in the day-to-day realities of investment, development and fund management operations in a leading international property company.

All the briefings are based on research conducted by a sophisticated in-house research team with expertise in macroeconomics, urban economics, financial economics and econometrics, led by a well- known specialist in the field. The topics highlight the relationship between real estate markets and global economic and political events – an area not well covered by academic journals.

A compelling introduction considers the dramatic boom and slump in real estate values that led up to the Great Financial Crisis. The briefings are then presented, grouped into broad themes: macro economics and real estate; GDP, recessions and inflation; REITs; construction; Asia; retail, offices and housing markets; the formation of investment yields. A final chapter considers the medium-term future for real estate in the context of the ongoing financial crisis.

Topics span the key sectors of office, retail and residential real estate in over 40 countries, with a focus on private sector investment, development and management. The perspective is long term, reflecting Grosvenor's unique position in real estate as a privately owned group.

The author provides a commentary on each topic, giving context to the research and the implications for strategy, drawing out two unifying themes: the effect of globalisation; and the importance of macro economics and geo-politics in real estate research.

Together, the briefings offer a penetrating analysis of real estate markets in the era of globalisation and financial crises. The era of crises is far from over, and Real Estate and Globalisation provides invaluable insights for property professionals worldwide – developers, occupiers, investment analysts and planners – on the nature of the processes that create such intense property market volatility. The book is also a unique source of guidance on practical property research for final year undergraduates and postgraduates on property courses, as well in geography, planning, architecture, and construction.

Starkey: Introduction to Strategies for Organic Synthesis

The stepping-stone text for students with a preliminary knowledge of organic chemistry looking to move into organic synthesis research and graduate-level coursework

Organic synthesis is an advanced but important field of organic chemistry, however resources for advanced undergraduates and graduate students moving from introductory organic chemistry courses to organic synthesis research are scarce. Introduction to Strategies for Organic Synthesis is designed to fill this void, teaching practical skills for making logical retrosynthetic disconnections, while reviewing basic organic transformations, reactions, and reactivities.

Divided into seven parts that include sections on Retrosynthesis and Protective Groups; Overview of Organic Transformations; Synthesis of Monofunctional Target Molecules; Synthesis of Target Molecules with Two Functional Groups; Synthesis of Aromatic Target Molecules; Synthesis of Compounds Containing Rings; and Predicting and Controlling Stereochemistry, the book covers everything students need to successfully perform retrosynthetic analyses of target molecule synthesis.

Starting with a review of functional group transformations, reagents, and reaction mechanisms, the book demonstrates how to plan a synthesis, explaining functional group analysis and strategic disconnections. Incorporating a review of the organic reactions covered, it also demonstrates each reaction from a synthetic chemist's point of view, to provide students with a clearer understanding of how retrosynthetic disconnections are made.

Including detailed solutions to over 300 problems, worked-through examples and end-of-chapter comprehension problems, Introduction to Strategies for Organic Synthesis serves as a stepping stone for students with an introductory knowledge of organic chemistry looking to progress to more advanced synthetic concepts and methodologies.

Chopra: Introduction to Google SketchUp 2nd edition

Considerably easier to use than other 3D software, Google SketchUp has found a niche in architecture, landscape design, real estate development, furniture building, and other design professions. This book provides an accessible approach that assumes no previous 3D modeling experience and explains the basic concepts involved in 3D modeling. Introduction to SketchUp shows readers how to build a 3D model, print it, share it, export it to another professional design package, export it to Google Earth, and create a 3D animated tour. It also helps readers harness the power of Google SketchUp so that they can populate Google Earth with 3D buildings, monuments, and other sculptures.

This edition is updated with the latest version of Google SketchUp software, easy-to-read, and practical, this text not only helps you learn how to use Google SketchUp at your own pace; it helps you master the core competencies and skills you need to succeed. Developed with architects, interior designers, landscapers and other design gurus in mind, Google SketchUp is the fast, easy way to build 3D models of anything you wants—buildings, furniture, landscapes, or your own unique creations.

Key Features
  • Assumes no prior experience with SketchUp.
  • Covers both the retail (SketchUp Pro) and free Google download versions.
  • Explores how to harness the power of Google SketchUp to create 3D models, add textures, create animated walkthroughs, and export models into Google Earth.
  • Career Connection and In the Real World sections presents real life examples throughout the text, which illustrates how professional architects, interior designers, and other design gurus use Google SketchUp.
  • Clear, everyday language and clean format. Students can read each chapter without being intimidated by difficult language or overwhelmed by sidebars, textboxes, and other fillers that interrupt the flow of the writing.
  • Modular format. Instructors can reorder textbook content to suit the needs of a particular class. The text proceeds logically from the basics to more challenging material, and chapters are further organized into sections that are self-contained for maximum teaching and learning flexibility.
  • Tips from the Professionals. A list of tips that provide relevant advice and helpful tools for students.
  • Apply: What Would You Do?These questions drive home key ideas by asking students to synthesize andapply chapter concepts to new, real-life situations and scenarios.
  • Be a Designer, Architect, and Developer...Found at the end of each chapter, “Be a . . .” questions are designed to extend students’ thinking and are thus ideal for discussion or writing assignments. Using an open-ended format and sometimes based on Web sources, they encourage students to draw conclusions using chapter material applied to real-world situations, which fosters both mastery and independent learning.
